Colleges and universities across the country are concerned about their ability to recruit, retain, and graduate students. On average, only about 1 out of every 2 students attending a community college will return for a second year of study and 30% will drop out of their 4-year college during the the first year. Less than 50% of students who start college ever finish their degree.

A growing number of factors contribute to this crisis

  • more students attending part-time and working their way through college
  • increased number of first-generation college students
  • students being admitted with less than adequate educational preparation

Fortunately, the most successful colleges and universities are finding ways to meet these challenges and promote the success of their students. Successful institutions

  • establish and implement comprehensive pre-matriculation college readiness assessment programs
  • use assessment data to identify student risk
  • develop comprehensive data-use plans in cooperation with campus academic and student support unites
  • implement and assess those data-use plans
